COMMUNITY OUTREACH

This April CSHC therapist Hollie Bowling participated in an informational telethon hosted by WBTV to answer questions about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A variety of questions came in, ranging from inquiries about signs and symptoms of ASD to those seeking guidance for their adult children with ASD who need help finding housing and employment. Panelists were able to provide a listening ear to callers as well as resource and referral information to meet their needs. Thanks Holly!

Maggie Page, Hearing Instrument Specialist, and Joann King, administrative assistant, provided free hearing screenings at the Harris YMCA's Senior Health Fair this spring. Maggie, along with President William Hall, also shared information on hearing aid technology and assistive listening devices with the Active Older Adult group at the Harris YMCA.

CSHC will be offering FREE hearing screenings at Briarwood Elementary through the Junior League Kid's Health Link on August 22nd from 10am to 2pm.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

I am grateful that the Board and Staff at CSHC have responded positively to the challenging times we face as an organization. Our strategic plan, fund raising efforts, and better communications regarding the critical nature of our services with the United Way Allocation Panel resulted in limiting our United Way allocation reduction to 31%. We were fortunate to be featured on several news reports on TV and in the Observer, which resulted in new sources of support and increased awareness of communication disorders.

The Board has been busy recruiting new members and recently installed Dave Wahlizer, Dana Lowder, Ellen Stahlsmith and Paul Bass to replace outgoing members. To further our recruitment efforts I am requesting that everyone who reads this refer a good candidate for our board of directors. Please direct candidates to me or contact me (704 523-8027 ext 13) with your suggestions. I promise to follow up quickly and involve key staff as well as the board's nominating committee for the required interview and information exchange. Your candidate will find a fully committed and engaged board focused on ensuring that we meet our mission in the community and continue to thrive in changing times.

William T. Hall, President

CSHC HIGHLIGHTS
Congratulations to Kristen McAvoy, SLP at CSHC since 2005, and her husband Chris on the birth of their son, Connor Bernard McAvoy. What a cutie!

SLPs Angie Rikard and Joy Mast traveled to Texas in April to attend the state speech-language and hearing convention. They received fantastic information on how to better serve our bilingual clients with communication disorders

We would like to welcome Emily Scott, our newest SLP, to the CSHC Team.
