"We found out that Hannah had a severe hearing loss in her right ear during her kindergarten check up.
How could I have missed that? She compensated so well that I never knew. Her doctor advised us that we
did have the option of getting a hearing aid for her; however, because she was so young we opted to
just wait and see how things went when she started school. Very early, the teacher noticed that
Hannah was struggling a bit, so I immediately called our insurance company to check into getting
her a hearing aid. When I was informed that this was not covered under our plan, I couldn't
believe it. I began to get concerned. How much would one cost?
I could not deny the fact
that it would be to her advantage to get one, yet when I discovered the cost of one would
be well over $1,000 my heart sank as I began to question where and when we would come up
with that. By the time we saved for it, her first year of school would be over and she would
have missed so much. I was very discouraged. Then I heard about Charlotte Speech and Hearing. I contacted
them and explained my situation. Hannah was immediately set up for an evaluation. All the while, we
were reassured that there would be no cost. I was so excited! Hannah's hearing loss was confirmed and
Hannah's "hot pink" hearing aid was ordered. As a parent, one of the most difficult things
to face is when your child needs help and you feel limited. We consider Charlotte Speech and
Hearing, both the staff and the donors, a blessing to our family. Since Hannah received her
hearing aid, her teacher says she is much more interactive in class and we are confident
that she will have no problem keeping up. Also since getting her hearing aid Hannah has
picked up a new hobby: singing. This was something she did not do much of before.
